Every 30 minutes, a child is born with a life sentence.
I am sitting quietly at my desk, contemplating lunch and playing with my stress-relief sheep which I have named Squidgy. Squidgy has been a good friend to me this morning, distracting me as I go through the rigmarole of arranging interviews and sifting through C.V's to recruit a new manager. Yes, recruit my own boss. How unique. I am considering putting forward the idea of extensive personality profiling to be done during the interviews, as I dont want a complete fuckwit bunny-boiler like my last boss. I also wont hire anyone with scary greek-scarecrow hair or tiny feet. So there. Call me elitist if you like, but I am not having a repeat of Costa Constantiou Costatisisisis... or whatever his name was.... my old, slightly phsychotic boss.
Now, the more important part of my day.
I have to go and arrange Jeans for Genes day. For anyone not in the U.K, this is a once a year fundraising event which takes place on the first friday in October. Everyone involved donates £2, and wears jeans to work on that day. There are many other events and fundraisers, but that is the main idea. The money raised goes to Jeans For Genes, which is a charity set up to help children born with genetic disorders.
In Britain, there is a child born every 30 minutes with a severe genetic disorder. That is one in every 33 children - and most of these disorders currently have very little available treatment and even less cures. There is suprisingly little government funded research designed to help these children -- and this is where Jeans for Genes comes in. This year, we hope to raise 4 million pounds throughout the UK, which will go towards building research centers and treating many of the poorer, worst affected children.
I myself will be doing some fundraising - and will set up a paypal donation account if anyone is interested - details of which will follow in the near future.
