No Roll-Back for a Buckeye
This from the Governor convicted recently for taking/not reporting exceeding gifts from a campaign contributor who ALSO happens to be the person responsible for the Coingate misappropriation of state funds.
Dayton Daily News (9/8/05):Taft said he has a problem with cutting Ohio's taxes of 28 cents a gallon, which pays for state road and bridge work.
"If you were to take off the gas tax or reduce it, you'd lose the revenues for your highways on the one hand, and you couldn't necessarily be certain that these companies would lower their prices by that amount," Taft said. State House and Senate leaders agreed.
The debate is coming up nationwide. Georgia already suspended its gas tax, and the governors of Pennsylvania and Tennessee are considering similar actions. Lawmakers in Wisconsin and Maine are urging colleagues to return from summer break early to act on the gas tax, but lawmakers in Massachusetts say they won't support a tax holiday.
So let me get this straight. Georgia, which happens to be quite a bit larger than Ohio, with vastly more roadways and bridge networks can afford to make a short term roll-back on state gasoline tax, but Ohio cannot seem to grasp it. Meanwhile Taft continues to run about in his state vehicles having his fees paid by the taxpayers and campaign contributors, while the farmers and other citizens have to make due.
Disgruntled. *mutters*
