Twin Sentinels

Sentinels of the sea, Atlas citadels bracing the sky,
ravaged by winged angels, bedeviled, awry.
What horror delivered evil tiding with baneful view,
a nightmare, a torment, too terrible to be true?
With open-mouthed stare, all bear shocked witness,
to gushing wounds of hellish flame and unbearable distress.
Valor surges forth, heeding Gabriel's trumpet call,
heroes climb to destiny, whilst others stand in thrall.
What courage measured in traversing the path of fate,
resolved to make a difference, and destruction abate.
Time, marches on, cruelly mocking their desperate deed,
holding true to their hearts, refusing in defeat, to concede.
Released, in a concealing maelstrom of collapse, lost hope,
a fog of disbelief erupts, choking miasma, disastrous scope.
The curtain descends, voices and hearts scream for reprieve,
the grey veil's earthly plunge, harbinger for all to grieve.
Through the mists of Avalon, disbelieved, hidden and feared,
chirping of locators, unending grey mantle, survivors dust smeared.
