Rockstar Supernova recap

No way was I nor the audience expecting this show to end up this way as Rockstar:Supernova chose Supernovas lead singer.

It started with the bottom 4 of Magni, Toby, Dilana and Lukas.

Now when they chose the bottom three and Dilana was the only one left sitting, everyone pretty much thought she was in control and had pulled it off.

First to be Tommy-hawked was Magni. (shown right)

He should have seen that coming when the rockers thought that his original song wasn't as memorable as the others the prior night.

The first night of the two-part finale, I had the voting pegged in the early preliminary vote. I saw it to be just the way the order was at the start of voting.

1 Dilana
2 Toby
3 Magni
4 Lukas

You could see it on Dilana's face as she was the only one left sitting. She actually thought she had won it. I'm sure she was giddy all night, otherwise she would not have done such a lackluster final performance of "Zombie" by the Cranberries. It was like she stopped caring as she oversang the song somewhat out of tune. A far cry from her stellar performance of the Police' "Roxanne" and pranced by Paula Abdul sitting in the audience the night before. Dave Navarro was classic in his acknowledgement of the presence of the American Idol Judge as he brought up the how Paula comes to Rockstar to hear REAL rock and roll.

Toby, with his command of the audience was becoming a dynamo in himself.

Purely, he would have eventually outshined the band. He has the power and shine of a modern day Billy Idol, only with less of the rebel look.

Magni is good, just not good enough this time around.

Magni

He, like Ryan Starr before him, was a dark horse... But the dark horses don't always finish the race.

Lukas. When I first saw him I thought he was interesting. His sense of style is great and he was definitely fun to watch perform with his quirky jerky dance moves. At times he reminded me of a flashy Marty Casey from last year. He had a tendency to be broody, yet wild at the same time. Unfortunately, his broodiness tends to lend itself more on the Emo side rather than a Gothic side and I can think of nothing more in this world to hate except Emo. Now, over time, his vocals grated on me. He has such a weird way of pronouncing words when he sings that you can barely understand what he's saying when he's on stage.

With that said, lets go back to the final two. They sent Toby packing abruptly home in the same breath Tommy was buttering his muffin with sugared praise.

On to the final two.

Shroud_of_Dilana.jpg

Dilana, clearly the favourite to win from everywhere from the fans to the TV rags and Newspapers. Her picture is everywhere. She's got the most powerful voice our kind has seen since Slick and Joplin. She's matriarchal, intense, controlling, sweet and determined in the same breath.

Lukas. In many ways, he reminds me of Billy Idol more than Toby. Quirky, brooding, dark and yet slightly devoid of humour.

The betting man had his money on Dilana for the sure thing. The crowd could not control the chants of "Di-La-Na!" when Tommy Lee asked for a "little help" from the audience. Clearly she was the fan favourite. Dilana_Sings.jpg
I remember Gilby talking about the songwriting abilities of Lukas and Dilana. She was too literal in her lyrics. Well I know what THAT'S like, but at least she HAS lyrics. Lukas came to songwriting clinic with a verse and a chorus. I smell another Johnny Bravo here.

...and yet... She lost. "Lukas ...you're our boy" was the answer from Supernova.

What a blowhead THAT was. Almost the same reaction they gave Chris Daughtry on American Idol. What I find was how many of them offered her a golden consolation prize. I swear, to get the fans off their backs they kept piling on the gifts: "Tour with us...after you tour with us, we'll help you write and produce your record (mind you, no one mentioned that you have to get SIGNED first) and we'll even PLAY on it." Ok... Ummm...so how is that losing in this contest? Lukas is now forced to be part of a band I feel he will simply blend into and Dilana will go solo and be the dynamic bird she truly is.

So when you think about it...who REALLY won that night? When you think about it, I became a fan of Storm Large, Ryan Starr, Dilana and Toby. I'd buy tickets to their concerts and I'd buy their albums. I'm not too sure about Supernova.

And I vote Storm Large...

...to be cast as the next Wonder Woman
